installing XP SP2/SP1 on Acer Aspire 4710 or any 47xx model..

First download the following utilities:-

a> NLite--this is the tool needed for slipstreaming the sata drivers into a XP cd

b>SATA drivers for ACER 4710:-

http://abhi88mcet.googlepages.com/recompiled_sata_drivers_abhi88_acer4.zip

unzip it now anywhere in ur computer..
it will unzip a folder named AHCI4710...leave it that way..

c>DOT.NET Framework 2.0 (optional):-
needed to run NLite..if Dot.NET Framework 2.0 is already installed, u neednt dwnload it...if it aint installed..install it..

Now with the real thing...

1>Insert ur Win XP boot cd in the cd drive, explore it..n copy all the files to a folder named WINXP (create,if nt created already) on ur computer (any drive..)..

n i mean ..ALL thats inside the cd...DNT right click on the cd icon in my computer n copy the cd..but EXPLORE / OPEN it..n then copy alls that inside into a folder named WINXP..



2> Install nLite and open it.


click Next..

3>

click Browse..

4>choose the WINXP folder where u copied the XP cd..

n then click OK...

the screen should look like this..with exception only to the drive letter (depending on where u copied the XP files..here its E:\WINXP...in ur case, the letter E may varry ..hope,u r getting the point..rt?? plss plss say yes, coz i can bend only this far..)

click Next..


jst click Next..


5>select only those that r highlighted..the "Drivers" n the "Bootable ISO" only..

n then click Next..

6>

on this screen, click insert > select "Single driver" > locate the driver and click "Open"..

now, WTF !! is the driver..rt??
well, at the beginning u unzipped the SATA drivers ...rt?? remember the AHCI4710 folder??
jst browse to it..
n then select the file that says iaahci.inf..
click Open..

7>.
on this screen, jst select the highlighted driver n make sure the Textmode driver option is selected..
click OK..

8>.
the next window will look like this..jst click Next..

9>.
Click "Yes"

10>.now take out any cd present in the cd drive (yes rikhs, its safe now to take out the XP cd..)
n insert any blank cd fr burning (the process may run inbetween)..

When process is finished, click "Next"..

11>.select "Direct Burn", select the lowest burn speed, and click "Burn". Dont forget to check "Verifiy" (optional)
now now rikhs..be patient..n u know, thats what u lack the most :P
let the bloody cd burn..

When burn and verifiy process completed, click "Next"

click Finish...
n well, rikhs..u jst made urself a slipstream XP ..congrats..!!!! :)

take that cd u burnt now..n install XP in ur Acer Aspire 4710...
it will show ur SATA hdd..
wen XP is installed, jst install the drivers fr XP u dwnloaded already (ya ya..the VGA,Audio,LAn blah blah..)
n stop fussing bout minor problems..shit happens..n u know what to do then..:)

Day 1 with Ubuntu 7.04 Fiesty Fawn

Ubuntu 7.04 is a lovely distro from the Debian ppl .The installation was a breeze, with all the graphical instructions u need. I made a dual boot with my existing Windows Xp,and jst gave this Linux distro about 5Gig of space. The installation recquired a free space of bout 2gigs.

Ubuntu doesnt support mp3 or divx out of the box.That was the major drawback of a otherwise lovely OS. The desktop effects are superb with the virtual terminals on a rotating cube.

now comes the pain and the hard part, installing the mp3 codecs and the divx plugins.

Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn (henceforth will be referred to as UFF) is a debian variation,so the packages for UFF is of .deb format. The audio player of UFF is Rythmbox and video player is Totem Movie Player.Both of them needs gstreamer pugins for operation.

there are two ways to install the plugins.

1: manually dwnloading them from http://packages.debian.com/ (the best i've found after googling fr an hour)

2: using the apt-get install command to dwnload the packages n install them from the internet

from the debian packages dwnloaded (.deb) i found that installing them manually was a hell lot easier with the dpkg -i command only if u have all the dependenies resolved...i repeat..only if all the dependancies is resolved..

N if its not done...then welcome to the dependency hell...

Otherwise u need an active internet connection to dwnload the packages with their dependencies from the said repository..

N thats where my headache started..

I have a mobile GPRS system with Airtel provider and MOBILE OFFICE as the GPRS service. Unfornunately i couldnt connect my phone to the internet..coz i later found out that the cable for the same works on all GPRS 10 phones ..n my Samsung C210 is a class 6 GPRS. Better go for Nokia 3220 or higher for Internet in UFF.

The other way round is to share internet from another system via ethernet.

Steps to share internet from a system running Windows with internet..

1> make a new Home network with the option to make this computer as the one with direct internet access checked in..

2> now on the terminal/command promt in dos/windows ttype ipconfig/all to get the Primary and Alternate DNS. Note them down along with the IP address of the ISP. All of these should be clearly shown on the screen.

3> Now type in the Default Gateway,Primary DNS.Alternate DNS in the LAN comnnection TCP/IP property section with the ones as shown in the figure if u r using Airtel Mobile OFFice.

4> now in UFF in ur other system jst plug in the ethernet RJ 45 and make sure the Network proxy is set to "automatic" from the System>Administrator>Network Proxy.Do not enter the manuall proxy of 1092.168.0.2

5> now open the Firefox..and goto Edit>Preferences>security>network..

set the proxy to DHCP..

6> Hola!! u have ur internet shared n working in UFF..

Steps to download XMMS: the winamp of linux..

1> in the terminal type in sudo apt-get install xmms

after bout 15 min of processing the xmms is downloaded and installed in Applications>Sound n Video>XMMS

2> u can play mp3's now..

3> for gstreamer type in sudo apt-get install gstreamer

4> for VLC player type in sudo apt-get install vlc

now u can listen to ur mp3's and watch ur videos..

problems that i faced....

1> the videos dnt show up instantly ..instead i see a blank screen..its coz my intel 950 GMA video controller isnt recognized..i have to move the vlc box a bit to get the picture..

2> I SIMPLY CANT GET MY AIRTEL MOBILE OFFICE WORKING..

rest is too good fr ur eyes....

many of us have been scrapping day n night in orkut.. some of us having enormous scrapbook entries..emphatically trying to clean it up..

what they want is magic wand ..a clean sweep..n vrooom..all the scraps gone..

2>in Firefox..goto Tools button..then to Security option..then jst add http://greasemonkey.net in the Script Addon Exception list..

3> download greasemonkey 0.65 from http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/...it will auto install..

4> click here to install the Greasemonkey script..

5>once installed ..log on to ur orkut scrapbook..the script will automatically start deleting scraps from the oldest first..
